Target exams

Red flags

• Altered mental status, seizure or collapse in heat or after exertion — treat as heat stroke until proven otherwise; cool immediately
• Infant or young child left in a vehicle or hot enclosed space
• Adolescent athlete with collapse on a hot humid field — do not wait for hospital before starting aggressive cooling when immersion is available
• Known cardiac disease, obesity or disability exercising in extreme heat without a modified plan
• Heat illness plus inability to drink, persistent vomiting, or dark urine suggesting rhabdomyolysis
• Returning to full training the day after heat stroke or severe heat exhaustion
