Meet the patient — "doctor, what about that magnet treatment?"
A 42-year-old nurse has run through sertraline, venlafaxine and mirtazapine — adequate dose, adequate duration, genuine adherence, confirmed with her GP and her pharmacist. She is not psychotic, not catatonic, still eating and drinking, no recent attempt, and she goes to work in tears. She hands you a printout on rTMS with one paragraph circled in yellow.[9][12]
Her partner wants ECT "to just fix it"; she wants "the magnet, not the electricity"; the registrar mentions a chest implant "that sends signals up a nerve." Sorting those three asks — without embarrassment, and without promising what the trials do not deliver — is exactly what this topic is for.[9][12]
