A 38-year-old woman presents with panic attacks that happen only when her husband travels for work. She cannot sleep alone, texts him dozens of times a day, and has started refusing to let him go. She is embarrassed, has been told it is "just GAD", and her notes carry a decade-old label of dependent personality.[4][6][7]
Two questions are live. Is the central fear separation, rather than panic or worry in general? And has anyone ever actually asked? Adult separation anxiety disorder is one of the most under-recognised diagnoses in the room — not because it is rare, but because nobody screens for it. Miss it and you titrate an SSRI for the wrong formulation for years.[4][5][6]
