Meet the patient
A worried mother reads an internet headline that "anaesthesia causes brain damage" and asks you to delay her six-month-old son's inguinal hernia repair until he is three. The headline is built on animal data; the human trials tell a calmer story — but the hernia will not wait three years, and incarceration is a real risk. Your job is to counsel honestly without frightening her into unsafe delay.[1]
The single question that frames the topic: is this a brief single exposure for necessary surgery, or a prolonged or repeated exposure in a critically ill child? The reassuring evidence covers the first; the honest uncertainty covers the second. Match your counselling to the question.[3]
